Printed Perspectives

23 November 2023 - 5 January 2024

Dellasposa is pleased to present Printed Perspectives, featuring works by Modern British artists Barbara Hepworth, Lynn Chadwick, Howard Hodgkin, Henry Moore, Patrick Heron, and Graham Sutherland, the exhibition showcases unique drawings, works on paper and original limited edition prints.

Lynn Chadwick, Barbara Hepworth, and Henry Moore's works draw together a shared interest in the figure and its relationship to the surrounding space. Hepworth and Moore's prints and drawings use evocative, shifting textures to describe modern forms in relation to their sculptural work, capturing organic forms while exploring shadows and shafts of light. Their sensuous lines contrast with Chadwick's more angular, geometric and constructivist approach to figuration, reflecting a particular angst and tension of the post-war period.

Howard Hodgkin and Patrick Heron are both recognised for their use of intense colour and their deeply personal, emotionally charged paintings. Alastair Smart best describes Hodgkin's works as 'representational pictures of emotional situations,' reflecting his intense use of colour and brushwork to convey his memories and emotions. Similarly, Heron's works are distinguished by vibrant colours and abstract compositions, reflecting his exploration of colour relationships and spatial dynamics. Both artists' were deeply rooted in their personal experiences and emotions, reflecting a profound connection to their surroundings and memories.

Barbara Hepworth's (1903-1975) screenprints provide a fresh dimension to her sculptural legacy. Through intricate cuts and delicate linework, Hepworth translates the essence of her organic forms into the two-dimensional realm. The prints become a testament to her ability to convey a sense of fluidity and balance, encapsulating the enduring elegance that defined her sculptures.

Lynn Chadwick's (1914-2003) abstract sculptures find a counterpart in his etchings, where the dynamic and angular forms come to life on paper. The prints capture the essence of Chadwick's sculptural vision, showcasing the interplay between light and shadow, mass and void. Chadwick's graphic explorations reveal a continuity of expression that seamlessly transcends from sculpture to print.

Howard Hodgkin's (1932-2017) emotionally charged paintings extend their reach into the realm of aquatint. The prints, marked by vibrant colours and gestural brushstrokes, serve as windows into the artist's emotional landscape. Hodgkin's ability to convey intimacy and spontaneity through printmaking adds a layer of depth to his exploration of colour and form.

Henry Moore's (1898-1986) drawings and prints offer a unique perspective on his iconic sculptural works. These prints, marked by a balance of abstraction and representation, showcase Moore's fascination with the human figure and the natural world. The lithographs become a bridge between his monumental sculptures and the intimacy of the printed page.

Graham Sutherland's (1903-1980) surreal and distorted imagery takes on new life in his graphic works. Through lithography and etching, Sutherland weaves intricate narratives that challenge conventional perceptions. The prints invite viewers to explore the enigmatic realms that Sutherland so masterfully crafted throughout his career, providing a visual feast of the strange and captivating.
