New Beginnings III [Yellow] reflects Damien Hirst’s enduring fascination with the butterfly as a metaphor for transformation, mortality, and beauty. Created in 2011, the work presents an entomological rendering of a Papilio blumei (Green Swallowtail) with a Pop Art sensibility: the butterfly hovers centrally against a saturated yellow ground. Here, colour acts as a catalyst for renewal, revealing, destabilising, and marking the instant before full transformation. Combined with the butterfly’s metamorphic iconography, these qualities make New Beginnings III a symbol of perpetual becoming.
