Created using a large-format film camera with layered exposures, Nicholas Hughes achieved a synthesis between reality and abstraction through his distinctive process of distillation through darkness. The work captures an incredible sense of stillness despite the interplay of dark and light, reflecting Hughes' quest for tranquillity during significant changes in the world.

The ghostly forest imagery mediates humanity's disconnection from nature's spiritual essence. Hughes' technique of constructing forests from accumulated memories demonstrates his sophisticated approach to slow photography. The work's symbolism has grown increasingly significant since its creation. It speaks to both universal Romantic themes and contemporary environmental sensibilities while exploring the space between human-inhabited realms and nature's autonomous domain.
