Created for Perry’s 2017 exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery, this work aims to address the migrant crisis. Here he combines the cultural themes associated with the red carpet: in the West as a signifying of the pomp and formality of ceremonious welcomes, and in the East the rich history of Afghan textile arts.
Over this Perry depicts a map of Britain, around which are study fortified walls. It is thus both physically and metaphorically closed to the outside world. This is Britain distorted: emotionally, spiritually, intellectually; a reflection of contemporary political and social upheaval. It's a portrait of Britain in the social-media age, littered with words and buzz phrases that typified public discourse.
