Lynn Chadwick’s Two Figures (1973) distils his sculptural ethos into a two-dimensional medium, emphasising angularity and abstraction. The composition portrays a male and female pair, their forms reduced to geometric planes and spindly lines, evoking both fragility and strength. Chadwick’s angular forms imbue his figures with anonymity, while their gesture suggests quiet interaction, capturing his interest in body language as a means of expression.

Inspired by his architectural background, Chadwick constructs the figures with a precision that echoes his Brutalist sculptures. The present work reflects themes central to his oeuvre: the tension between human vulnerability and resilience and the interplay of balance and motion. Chadwick’s Two Figures evokes an emotional resonance through simplified forms, solidifying his legacy in post-war British art.
