Mornington Terrace belongs to the small constellation of north London streets that have grounded Frank Auerbach’s practice for over seven decades, a lived terrain walked daily from his Camden Town studio and transformed into searching images of urban feeling. In this 2024 work, that familiar corner becomes both subject and self‑portrait: the angles of road, railings and façades register time, memory and persistence in a city he once argued had “not been properly painted,” yet made his life’s project to record. The unique appeal of this work lies in how this place functions as a key tableau within his oeuvre, relating directly to Mornington Terrace and Camden landscapes now held in museum collections.
