Created in 2010, Star Spangled epitomises Gillian Ayres's radical approach to printmaking as an extension of her celebrated abstract painting practice. This work exemplifies the artist's innovative use of sugar-lift aquatint and carborundum etching, a technique that allowed her to build rich, tactile surfaces that echo the impasto quality of her canvases. Each print in the edition is extensively hand-coloured in acrylic, making every impression unique—a testament to Ayres's belief that printmaking should retain the spontaneity and individuality of painting. The dynamic composition of vivid blues, vibrant yellows, emerald greens, and bold reds creates an explosive energy that reflects her lifelong fascination with the expressive potential of pure colour.

This particular piece was created during the artist's mature period. It equally enhances a refined or modern room, offering collectors a piece that bridges the intimacy of works on paper with the visual impact of large-scale painting. The artwork is in excellent condition, reflecting Ayres' meticulous attention to the integrity of each impression.

Gillian Ayres RA (1930-2018) was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1989, elected Royal Academician in 1991, and awarded a CBE in 2011. Her prints and paintings are held in major international collections, including Tate, the British Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Yale Centre for British Art.
