Through art, poetry, novels and punk rock, Billy Childish uses different mediums to explore his dysfunctional upbringing and experience with addiction and abuse. Although there are clear ties to Expressionism in his works, Childish is credited as co-creating Stuckism in 1999, which promotes figurative over conceptual painting. Although Childish left the group in 2001, this work is still deeply figurative with the strong, majestic wolf figure appearing out of the wood block. Although some tie Childish to YBAs, he is a self-professed outsider of the contemporary art world and prefers artistic independence.
