After meeting in 1942 Freud and Bernard quickly solidified a long-lasting friendship, based on their mutual love of art and Bernard’s insightful critiques. In the present artwork, Freud developed and manipulated his ‘stopping- out technique’. Before this plate was bitten, Freud stopped out with varnish areas of highlight such as the brows and parts of the forehead so that the drawn lines beneath the varnish would not be etched by the acid.
