Yinka Shonibare’s 'Earth Picture I’ features a black-and-white ruffed lemur alongside an African ancestral mask. Depicting an endangered monkey that once thrived in Africa before Western colonial industrialisation, the work highlights the devastating effects of industrialisation, deforestation, and fossil fuel use on the environment. Forest loss and overhunting are eroding African tropical biodiversity and threatening local human food security, livelihoods, and health. The African ancestral Gelede mask, a carved wooden headdress worn by male dancers during the public Gẹlẹdẹ spectacle of the Yoruba-Nago people, represents preindustrial African harmony when people had a deep connection, respect, and relationship with nature.
