You and Me belongs to the early years of Hodgkin's printmaking, when he first experimented with the medium. The work is characteristic of his lifelong conviction that colour is the substance of feeling. Described by the eminent art critic Robert Hughes as "a colourist unsurpassed among living painters," Hodgkin painted — and here printed — not what he saw but how he remembered things felt. Two rhyming movements of purple, distinct yet inseparable, enact the dynamic of the title itself, while the hand-applied colour — a note of spontaneity within a mechanical process — is the artist's gestural marks, refusing to let the image settle into and insisting on its status as something touched and irreducibly personal.
