The present work continues Antony Gormley’s four-decade exploration into what it means to inhabit the human form, treating the body not as a representation but as a vessel for consciousness and spatial awareness. Here, the artist transforms the corporeal into an index of presence, echoing his broader sculptural practice, in which the body becomes a universal symbol rather than an individual portraiture.

This work reflects his conviction that the body serves as both a physical anchor and an opening of the mind to infinite space — a meditation on how material flesh houses immaterial consciousness. Gormley employs an ink wash technique to dissolve the corporeal boundary between figure and field, transforming the human form from a fixed object into a fluid presence, evoking the ‘subjective space of becoming.’ The saturated paper absorbs water and pigment at varying rates, creating halos that suggest the body’s energetic extension beyond its form. It is a visual metaphor for consciousness inhabiting matter; the material vessel containing immaterial awareness, reflecting his conviction that physical form houses limitless consciousness.
