Six small figures crouch and swing against an immense, rugged terrain — and in that single image, Six of the Best holds something profound. Werner Bronkhorst places six figures on a classic cricket pitch amidst a vast, textured expanse. The title carries a double weight in cricket as a ‘six’ is the most a batsman can achieve — the greatest possible shot — and here, six players embody that same aspiration against a world far larger than themselves.
‘Six of the Best’ is an original limited-edition print with archival inks on canvas, hand-stretched on a wood float frame; a presentation as considered as the image itself. The hyperrealist manner of painting, emblematic of Bronkhorst’s rendering of fine detail and precision, is set against an abstract ground that reads as parched earth, geological time, and pure painterly texture, a hallmark of his signature approach across his series of works.
The conceptual heart of the piece draws from Bronkhorst’s guiding philosophy: "If we look at the world from above, all of us are miniatures." Here, sport becomes a lens for examining human agency — the figures are not defeated by the scale of their environment but are wholly absorbed in play within it, speaking to resilience, community, and the persistence of joy. This is contemporary art at its most quietly powerful. Six of the Best is available to acquire through Dellasposa Gallery, London.
