The New York Suite was made in the year of John Hoyland's first significant American exposure — a moment when his large-scale colour-field paintings were attracting serious international attention on both sides of the Atlantic. The New York Suite convey the same visual language: fields of saturated colour, arranged with apparent simplicity and yet calibrated with the rigour of a composer working in sound. As the artist reflected, ‘I was putting myself in the position of using colours which didn't come very easily to me... strange, high-key colour relationships.'
