Graham Sutherland was a British painter focused mostly on Surrealist abstractions of landscapes and figures. As his practice progressed, Sutherland’s natural depictions grew increasingly disturbing, often with organic growth formations with hints of human or animal characteristics. This work, completed a year before his death, Sutherland focuses on the regal lion, with shifts in its figuration creating slight discomfort for the viewer.
