A luminous cerulean plane animated by calligraphic ripples and glimpses of tiled grid underground and crisp, sunlit lawn. Hockney renders the scene as a hand-drawn colour lithograph on paper, inspired by the California light and the formal challenges of depicting the mercurial nature of water. This work by Hockney stands in dialogue with his iconic painting 'A Bigger Splash' (1967), while expanding the technical possibilities of printmaking through his series of dyed-pulp limited edition prints, Paper Pools.
