Christian Furr British, b. 1966

Christian Furr first came to prominence in 1995 when, aged twenty-eight, he became the youngest artist to paint HM Queen Elizabeth II after the Queen personally chose him to be commissioned by the Royal Overseas League.

 

Highly sought after for his painting and portrait commissions, the painter simultaneously follows the strong tradition of representation in British modern and contemporary art throughout his oeuvre. His techniques are rooted in a classical approach to portraiture and figurative painting. Featuring a high level of detail and realism, he has a particular talent for capturing the character and personality of his subjects, while his paintings are known for their emotional depth and sensitivity; he has a keen eye for capturing the nuances of human expression

Furr’s successive works have a adorned the walls of the Saatchi Gallery, The National Portrait Gallery, Royal Society of Portrait Painters and in the private collection at the Vatican. In 2004 Furr was awarded the Association of Colleges Award at the House of Commons in London given to further education alumni who have gone on to excellence in their chosen field. In 2017, Furr collaborated with American-Ivorian contemporary artist Aboudia (Abdoulaye Diarrassouba) producing works between New York, London, and Abidjan. In the same year, he also collaborated with English photographer Gered Mankowitz on the '45RPM' collection, which included artistic re-renderings of Mankowitz's photographic archive. In 2019, he had a mid career retrospective at the Williamson Art Gallery and Museum.

 

Furr is collected privately around the world and features in the permanent collection of the Dorchester and the Dorchester Collection's flagship art Hotel '45 Park Lane' , London. His new 2.7m painting for the newly refurbished Dorchester which features the Serpentine and Hyde Park was unveiled on 23rd January 2023
